DigitalOcean

4.5/52dm rating

An easy-to-use VPS with Singapore; good for self-hosting n8n.

A developer-friendly cloud provider: Droplet (VPS) with a Singapore region, suitable for self-hosting n8n, Docker and web apps.

Overview

DigitalOcean is a cloud infrastructure provider known for a simple interface and easy-to-follow documentation. Its core product is the Droplet, a Linux virtual server where you have full control to install Docker, n8n, databases, WordPress sites or your own API.

For Vietnamese businesses, a plus is the Singapore data center (SGP1), plus Bangalore (BLR1) and Sydney (SYD1) in the Asia-Pacific region. Besides Droplets, DigitalOcean also has App Platform for deploying apps without managing servers, managed databases and object storage.

It is a logical next step when you want to self-host automation tools instead of paying per run, but in return you must handle updates, backups and server security yourself.

Highlights

01

Easy-to-use Droplets

Create a Linux server in minutes, choosing the spec, operating system and region right in the web interface.

02

Singapore region

The SGP1 data center gives lower latency for users in Vietnam than servers in the US or Europe.

03

Low starting price

The cheapest Basic Droplet is billed hourly with a monthly cap, suitable for experiments.

04

Complete ecosystem

App Platform, managed databases, object storage and cloud firewalls.

05

Rich documentation

The official guide library covers many topics, useful for small technical teams learning on their own.

What it's for

Self-host n8n for operations

Run n8n with Docker on a Droplet in Singapore to automate CRM, email and reports.

Server for an AI chatbot

Put the chatbot backend, processing queue and database on one Droplet or split across several machines.

Company WordPress site

Manage hosting yourself instead of shared hosting for control over performance and security.

Test environment

Create a temporary Droplet to try new tools, then delete it so you only pay for the hours used.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Create an account and project

Sign up for DigitalOcean, add a payment method and create a Project to group resources.

  2. 2

    Create a Droplet

Choose the Singapore region (SGP1), the Ubuntu operating system and a spec with enough RAM for the app you plan to run.

  3. 3

    Use an SSH key

Add an SSH key when creating the Droplet instead of a password for safer login.

  4. 4

    Enable firewall and backups

Create a Cloud Firewall that opens only the necessary ports (SSH, 80, 443) and enable backups or periodic snapshots.

  5. 5

    Install the app

Log in to the server, install Docker, then run n8n or your app, and attach a domain and HTTPS through a reverse proxy.

Installing N8N on a DigitalOcean Droplet Tutorial

Real-world example

Illustrative scenario

An office equipment distributor in Hanoi wants to automatically send quotes and remind customers of outstanding debts by email. The IT department creates a Droplet in Singapore, installs Docker and n8n, and attaches an internal domain with HTTPS. The workflows pull data from Google Sheets and accounting software and run on a schedule every morning; weekly snapshots allow quick recovery if the configuration breaks.

Tips & notes

  • Delete Droplets when not in use

Droplets are billed hourly while they exist; for test machines, create a snapshot if needed and then delete them.

  • Choose a spec that is just enough

The cheapest plan has very little RAM; running n8n with a database calls for a higher spec to avoid freezing.

  • Don't open extra ports

Open only SSH, HTTP and HTTPS; put admin interfaces behind authentication or a private network.

  • Estimate bandwidth in advance

Each plan includes an outbound traffic allowance, for example 500 GiB on the cheapest plan, so estimate if your website has many images or videos.

FAQ

Does DigitalOcean have servers near Vietnam?

Yes, the SGP1 data center in Singapore is the closest option in the official region list.

What is the lowest price?

At the time of writing, the cheapest Basic Droplet starts at 4 USD/month with 1 vCPU, 512 MiB RAM and 10 GiB SSD; this spec only suits very light tasks.

Is there a free trial?

DigitalOcean often has credit promotions for new users but they change over time, so check the official site.

Can I use it if I'm not familiar with Linux?

You can start with App Platform or pre-installed apps on the Marketplace, but long-term self-hosting n8n still calls for someone who can administer servers.
